What Access Control is and Why Your Business Should Have It

Access control systems, or keyless entry systems, offer more control of facilities across multiple industries and business types, including offices, residential buildings, schools and universities, and healthcare facilities and hospitals – to name a few. The benefits of moving to an access control system include:

  • Heightened Security
  • Convenience
  • Scalability
  • Flexibility
  • Audit Trail Capabilities
  • Faster Emergency Response
  • Multi-Location Access
  • Integration with Security Systems

Here are the key types of access control to consider when evaluating which system makes sense for your business:

Key Fob

Key fob and entry card access systems make it easy for employees, staff, or residents to access buildings or specific areas of a building with just the tap of a fob or card. These systems are flexible for users and administrators but do not have remote management or activation capabilities.

While these systems are still widely used across all business sizes, as they allow for assigning and removing access, they can be cumbersome and time consuming to administer.

Keypad with PIN

With keypad entry, businesses typically assign employees a personal PIN that they use to access those areas that they are allowed to access. Changes in access permissions are fairly easy to make with this keyless system, in the event an employee’s role changes or leaves the company.

Mobile Apps

Mobile access control allows people to use their mobile devices as credentials, so there is no need for a key, fob or card. This added convenience can be appealing for both businesses and employees.

Some mobile access control systems require an app that employees need to log in to and scan, while others use Bluetooth technology that allows employees to wave their mobile devices in front of a sensor to gain access to buildings or specific, controlled areas of a building.

Biometric Devices

Biometric devices are the most sophisticated of the access control systems and utilize a scanner that has fingerprint or facial recognition software. These devices scan thousands of points on a person’s fingerprint or face to determine who the person is and what buildings, offices or areas they are allowed to access.
Some companies and offices that require high levels of security will use a biometric system in tandem with other employee verification systems to add a layer of authentication.
